Frankfurt flights cut after 35% drop in passengers
29.04.09
Lufthansa has suffered a 35% drop in passengers on its service between Edinburgh Airport and Frankfurt in the first three months of this year, as the global economic crisis caused a sharp decline in tourism and business traffic. As a result, the German airline said yesterday that it will to cut flights between the two cities from three-times a day to twice daily.
The reduction in passenger numbers in the first quarter of 2009 is almost 3 times higher than Lufthansa's UK average drop of just over 13% for the same period. A total of 24,044 passengers travelled on the Edinburgh to Frankfurt route during the period. However, at least the route fared better than Lufthansa's Cardiff - Frankfurt service, which will be axed completely this summer.
On a brighter note, the weak pound and a growing demand for walking and golfing holidays has prompted the airline to launch a once-a-week service between Frankfurt and Inverness for the summer.
