Ice block from plane crashes through house

A pensioner told of her ‘miraculous’ escape after a football sized chunk of ice fell from a plane and crashed through her kitchen roof. It landed a few feet away from where she was sitting, the Evening News reports.
Lilias Davidson, 65, was watching television in the kitchen of her Musselburgh home when the block of ice smashed through her roof. Her husband, Alistair, put the pieces of ice in the freezer - because he did not think anyone would believe that it had happened!
The grandmother-of-ten told the newspaper: ‘There was this almighty bang. I thought my telly had exploded. The speed it came through the ceiling at was unbelievable. I really got a fright and it's a miracle nobody was hurt.’
The block of ice destroyed half-a-dozen tiles on the roof of the Davidsons' home. Edinburgh Airport authorities are investigating the incident, and believe the ice fell from a cargo plane coming as it came in to land at the hub. Although ice falls from planes are not uncommon, it is rare for property to be hit.
A Civil Aviation Authority spokesman said that ice usually forms as a result of a faulty valve that allows liquid to leak out, which freezes in the very cold temperatures at high altitude. As the plane descends and the air warms up, the ice melts and falls off.
