Edinburgh weathering recession best
18.08.09
Edinburgh is weathering the recession the best of any UK airport this year, according to a review of passenger and cargo traffic. The review by RDC Aviation (we assuming using CAA figures) recorded an overall drop in UK airport traffic for the first 5 months of the year of over 10 percent, with nearly 10 million fewer passengers than in 2008. However, Edinburgh Airport recorded the lowest decrease at just 3 percent, representing just over 100,000 fewer passengers than 2008.
Domestic scheduled traffic at UK regional airports fell by over half a million passengers (11.7 percent) overall. However, flights into Edinburgh from Cardiff and Belfast saw a slight increase, while the new Bournemouth - Edinburgh route saw 37,645 people visit the Capital.
UK cargo in the January to May period decreased by almost 20 percent, but Edinburgh recorded the UK's largest increase when measured in additional tonnes with 3,890 (64 percent) more than last year. However, this was from quite a low base.
