Passengers up 4.8%
11.09.09
Passengers at Edinburgh Airport increased by 4.8% in August, the fifth month in a row of increases and one of two of BAA's UK airports that recorded growth last month (Heathrow was up 0.3%). Rival Glasgow had the sharpest decrease in traffic of BAA's seven UK airports, with a fall of 13.4%, and Aberdeen recorded a 9.8% drop.
BAA said that industry conditions remain 'difficult' and the outlook for the rest of the year is 'challenging'. The UK airport operator said the passenger declines at both Aberdeen and Glasgow reflect the ongoing impact of the global downturn. A spokesman added: ‘Quite simply, fewer people are taking holidays and weekend breaks, or flying on business, as a result of the recession.’
