Security alert closes airport
07.07.09
Edinburgh Airport was evacuated for about 2½ hours yesterday afternoon due to the discovery of a suspicious suitcase. Staff and passengers were cleared from the check-in area of the main terminal building, the food court and domestic arrivals after a suitcase was found in the ladies toilets in the UK arrivals area at about 14:20. It reopened at 17:00, with passengers still facing significant delays yesterday evening.
The airport handles up to 35,000 passengers a day during the summer peak, and up to 4500 passengers were affected by the closure. A Lothian & Borders Police spokesman said Army bomb disposal experts were called after the suitcase was found. He said: ‘They examined it and found that it posed no threat. Inquires are underway to establish how the suitcase came to be left in the toilets.’
